Halloween is my favourite holiday which is quite odd since we don’t even celebrate it in my country. I compiled a list of 12 films I watch in October to get into the Halloween spirit (they’re not all necessarily Halloween related). If you, like me, are not a big horror fan you might enjoy these films. So, without further ado and in no particular order, here’s my list:

1. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Plot:¬†“Jack Skellington, king of Halloween Town, discovers Christmas Town, but his attempts to bring Christmas to his home cause confusion.” (imdb.com)

Stars:¬†Chris Sarandon,¬†Catherine O’Hara,¬†Ken Page

Is it a Halloween film? Is it a Christmas film? I watch it on both occasions, just to be sure. I love the songs.

2. The Addams Family (1991)

Plot:¬†“Con artists plan to fleece an eccentric family using an accomplice who claims to be their long-lost uncle.” (imdb.com)

Stars: Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia, Christopher Lloyd, Christina Ricci

Oh, how I love this family. Gomez and Morticia are a beautiful couple. This film is hilarious.

3. Addams Family Values (1993)

Plot:¬†“A comical Gothic horror-movie-type family tries to rescue their beloved uncle from his gold-digging new love.” (imdb.com)

Stars: Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia, Christopher Lloyd, Christina Ricci

There’s a new family member! A great sequel; still lovable, still funny and I still want to be part of their family.

4. Beetlejuice (1988)

Plot:¬†“When a recently-deceased ghost couple find their now-vacant home invaded by an obnoxious family, they hire a sleazy ghost who gets rid of humans to help them.” (imdb.com)

Stars: Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder

Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Do I need to say more? (Winona Ryder is a QUEEN)

5. Sleepy Hollow (1999)

Plot:¬†“Ichabod Crane is sent to Sleepy Hollow to investigate the decapitations of 3 people with the culprit being the legendary apparition, the Headless Horseman.” (imdb.com)

Stars: Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci, Miranda Richardson, Michael Gambon

A great film that used to give me nightmares as a child.

6. Corpse Bride (2005)

Plot:¬†“When a shy groom practices his wedding vows in the inadvertent presence of a deceased young woman, she rises from the grave assuming he has married her.” (imdb.com)

Stars: Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Emily Watson

Another Tim Burton classic.

‚ô™ “Die, die we all pass away

But don’t wear a frown cuz it’s really okay

And you might try ‘n’ hide

And you might try ‘n’ pray

But we all end up the remains of the day”¬†‚ô™

7. Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)

Plot:¬†“The centuries old vampire Count Dracula comes to England to seduce his barrister Jonathan Harker’s fianc√©e Mina Murray and inflict havoc in the foreign land.” (imdb.com)

Stars: Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins, Keanu Reeves

A really good film with an excellent cast. I think we can all agree that Gary Oldman is one of the greatest actors ever.

8. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)

Plot:¬†“The infamous story of Benjamin Barker, a.k.a. Sweeney Todd, who sets up a barber shop down in London which is the basis for a sinister partnership with his fellow tenant, Mrs. Lovett. Based on the hit Broadway musical.” (imdb.com)

Stars: Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, Sacha Baron Cohen

One of my all-time favourite films. The songs are great, the actors are simply brilliant, the story is captivating. I was only 11 years old when it came out and I had to suffer through a couple of sleepless nights after watching it but it was worth it.

9. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Plot:¬†“A young F.B.I. cadet must confide in an incarcerated and manipulative killer to receive his help on catching another serial killer who skins his victims.” (imdb.com)

Stars: Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins

Sir Anthony Hopkins proving once again what a great actor he is.

10. Hotel Transylvania (2012)

Plot:¬†“Dracula, who operates a high-end resort away from the human world, goes into overprotective mode when a boy discovers the resort and falls for the count’s teen-aged daughter.” (imdb.com)

Stars: Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Fran Drescher

Didn’t expect to like this film as much as I did. It was funny and touching.

11. Edward Scissorhands (1990)

Plot:¬†“A gentle man, with scissors for hands, is brought into a new community after living in isolation.” (imdb.com)

Stars: Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Dianne Wiest

This film used to make me feel so sad as a kid because of the way poor Edward was being treated. It still does, actually.

12. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

Plot:¬†“A newly engaged couple have a breakdown in an isolated area and must pay a call to the bizarre residence of Dr. Frank-N-Furter.” (imdb.com)

Stars: Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick

The songs are catchy and Tim Curry is kinda sexy in that costume. What? No?
