My first blog post for 2018 had to be this show since I’m in love with it. Modern Family is an American television series that revolves around the lives of three families who are interrelated through Jay Pritchett and his two children, Mitchell and Claire. It’s probably my favourite TV show because it’s heartwarming, consistently hilarious throughout all seasons, and it never fails to cheer me up. Despite all the funny moments, there are also quite a few tearjerkers. As of January 2018, the show is in the middle of its 9th season.
Jay Pritchett (Ed O’Neill) is the owner of a closet company and remarried to a much younger Colombian woman named Gloria (Sofia Vergara). Gloria already has a son, Manny (Rico Rodriguez), from her previous marriage but later she has a child with Jay as well, Joe (Jeremy Maguire). Stella is their adorable pet dog.
Jay appears to be a close-minded, stoic man who hides his sensitive side really well. Gloria is a stunning woman, often mistaken for a trophy-wife. She loves every member of her immediate and extended family fiercely and is always there to help them. Manny is a very mature and serious boy; he is a hopeless romantic and never afraid to show affection.
Phil (Ty Burrell) and Claire (Julie Bowen) Dunphy have 3 kids: Haley (Sarah Hyland), Alex (Ariel Winter), and Luke (Nolan Gould). Phil is a real estate agent and Claire is a housewife in the first seasons but she takes over her father’s business later on.
Phil is a “cool dad”, he has a childlike attitude and he is one of the kindest characters in the show. Claire is more of a control-freak and definitely the stricter parent. Haley is the oldest child and “the pretty one”. She is not very bright, but she is a very popular girl and knows how to get what she wants. Alex is the opposite of Haley and the smartest person in the family. Despite her great intellect, she doesn’t seem to have a social life. Luke is the youngest Dunphy child who is known to be a lot like his dad. The two of them appear to be best buddies.
Mitchell Pritchett (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) is a lawyer. His husband Cameron Tucker (Eric Stonestreet) is a high school football coach and ex-music teacher. They have a daughter named Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons), who they adopted from Vietnam.
Mitchell is serious, witty, sarcastic, a bit neurotic and doesn’t like to have his personal space invaded. On the other hand, his husband Cam is flamboyant, dramatic, and extremely emotional. Lily is simply adorable; she is generally well-behaved but can become very sarcastic and snarky at times.
A major moment in television history was when Cam and Mitchell finally tied the knot, once California legalised gay marriage. Despite the writers and cast saying that they are not trying to make political statements, these two characters getting married is kind of a big deal. The two wedding episodes, along with the proposal episode, are quite special and important, handled with respect and sensitivity.

When I am watching a TV show, I usually don’t like all the characters, but Modern Family is an exception. I love every single one of them, they are all hilarious and beautifully portrayed. Congratulations to all the actors for doing such a wonderful job!
My favourite one is Mitchell, probably because we are quite alike since we share many personality traits and sometimes it’s like I am watching myself. Second favourite? Probably Gloria, Manny, or Lily. It’s impossible to decide. And because I love these kind of things, you can find two quizzes to discover which Modern Family character you are here and here.
Modern Family is still, almost a decade later, extremely popular. The show has won several Emmys, Golden Globes and SAG Awards. In fact, according to IMDB (x), the show has 117 wins and 342 nominations. Well-deserved and I hope they will win many more in the future.
The actors have so much chemistry, especially the three couples. Also, watching the youngest actors grow from children to young adults is amazing. After years of watching and rewatching all the episodes of this show, I feel like I am part of this family. Finally, I’d like to thank the cast, especially Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Sofia Vergara, for all the behind-the-scenes photos and selfies. I love them.
In conclusion, if you haven’t watched Modern Family yet, please do. I keep recommending it to people I know because it is probably the happiest show I’ve ever watched. I am so glad I made my parents watch it with me; they love it and we spend hours together laughing. To be honest, I wish it would never end.
